May 2021 Masses

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

Sunday, May 30, 2021
My Dear Friends in Christ,

God is love, and the Trinity is a sign of continual love flowing freely between Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This is good news for us as we are the fortunate recipients of the outpouring of the Father and Son’s love.

Jesus always points us to the love of the Father. We show our love to God by how we love our neighbor. The gifts of the Holy Spirit help us with that too. Not only will we love and seek Jesus but we will imitate Jesus in how we love and treat our neighbor. Spend some time with the offerings from staff to prepare for Sunday Mass.

Covid-19 Update:  The latest matrix from the Archdiocese says best practice – and the expectation – is to wear a face covering, not only for personal protection but to be respectful of others. Hymnals and worship aids are allowed. Sanitizing worship spaces continues as our commitment to health safety. A new (and hopefully final) Catholic Comeback Matrix will be updated soon.  This has been a long journey and it is not over.

If someone you know needs our prayers, you can send requests to wepray@saintcatherine.org. If you would like to receive the bulletin in the mail or are in need of some assistance, please contact Sister Pat at prussell@saintcatherine.org or 414-445-5115.

Pentecost

Sunday, May 23, 2021
My Dear Friends in Christ,

At Pentecost we hear the readings describing how tongues of fire came to rest on the Apostles and they were filled with the Holy Spirit. People nearby hear the Apostles speaking in their own native language talking about the wonders of God. Soon, the Apostles will go forth to the farthest edges of the world, spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Each of us has our own unique combination of these gifts that shapes us in who we are and how we will participate as God’s children. The combination can change over time too. The Holy Spirit will give us what we need when we need it. Jesus wants us to share our gifts, being witnesses to the wonders of God, and glorifying God with our lives. Spend some time with the offerings from staff to prepare for Sunday Mass.

Anticipate Sunday, May 23

  • Mass Readings – In the scripture readings Jesus tells about the coming of the Holy Spirit.
  • Youth and Family – Margaret Lee presents the Gifts of the Holy Spirit along with resources and reflection questions.
  • Scripture Reflection – Jon Metz offers this reflection to think about our confirmation and the presence of the Holy Spirit.
  • Music – To celebrate the Pentecost, Doug presents the music menu. We commemorate the birth of the Christian Church as the Holy Spirit descended on the followers of Jesus.

Seventh Sunday of Easter – the Ascension

Sunday, May 16, 2021
My Dear Friends in Christ,

In the daily readings this past week we heard Jesus telling his disciples that it is better for him to leave so that he could send them an advocate. Before he ascended, he commissioned his disciples to “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.” Sunday we celebrate his Ascension when Jesus returns to his Father, our Father.

The Ascension, the physical absence of the Lord, begins a new era: the time of the community of believers, the Church, becoming His presence on Earth. The Church must respond by bearing witness to the ascended Lord and making Him present in all parts of the World.

Spend some time with the offerings from staff to prepare for Sunday Mass.

Anticipate Sunday, May 16

  • Mass Readings – In the scripture readings Jesus commissions the apostles and us.
  • Scripture Reflection – Jon Metz offers this reflection to think about how we proclaim the Good News.
  • Music – To celebrate the Feast of the Ascension, Doug presents the music menu. God mounts his throne to shouts of joy!

Other Offerings

  • Beatification of Fr. Francis Jordan – Join the Salvatorian Community on May 15, virtually, at the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome, in celebrating the Beatification of our founder, Father Francis Jordan. For the times (1881), Fr. Jordan’s vision was bold: men and women, religious and lay, working together as equals to bring the Gospel of the Savior to all people everywhere. Our parish office assistant, Sister Pat Russell, is a Salvatorian sister. Two of our neighboring parishes, Mother of Good Counsel and St. Pius X, were founded and are led by Salvatorian priests. For more information about Fr. Jordan or the Salvatorians, go to www.congsds.org. You can also listen to the song “Eternal Life” at youtu.be/lieIw1t5szI
  • Facing Racism – As part of our parish’s effort to identify and confront racism in our midst, we offer prayers read by our parish youth. Here is the May Prayer offering.

Sixth Sunday of Easter

Sunday, May 9, 2021
My Dear Friends in Christ,

Throughout Scripture, we hear a familiar theme: Love of God and love of neighbor. Just as the depth of Jesus’ love for us is proven by the laying down of His life for us, so should we lay down our lives for others by imitating the caring, sharing, serving and self-sacrificing qualities of His love.

Today, as we celebrate Mother’s Day, we acknowledge a true example of the love Jesus is talking about. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers who are here and elsewhere, including those who don’t have children of their own but have been a mother-figure to their nieces, nephews and others. We also remember those who have gone before us. Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord. Spend some time with the offerings from staff to prepare for Sunday Mass.

Anticipate Sunday, May 9

  • Mass Readings – In the scripture readings Jesus reveals to the nations his saving power.
  • Scripture Reflection – Jon Metz offers this reflection to think about love as Jesus message to us.

Fifth Sunday of Easter

Sunday, May 2, 2021
My Dear Friends in Christ,

Connection is the theme of today’s readings. Jesus says He is the vine and we are the branches. If we are connected to the vine, we will live. The fruit produces more life. The plant and its branches simply need to be in the right place–the place that the gardener has prepared for it. Our fruits are our good deeds in life.

We remain connected to Jesus in three ways: by gathering in His name, by listening to His Word, and by sharing His Body and Blood. A good number of people have received the vaccine, and the parish continues to follow all the guidelines for sanitizing and social distancing; so if you have been hesitant to come back to Mass, I assure you it is safe to gather here as a community.

Spend some time with the offerings from staff to prepare for Sunday Mass.

Anticipate Sunday, May 2
