Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Sunday, August 29, 2021
My Dear Friends in Christ,
People may think the call to holiness is just for the few. Yet by virtue of our baptism, we are all called to holiness. As Catholics, we are blessed with many rituals that help us to pray. God gave us these rituals so we could draw closer to Him – not to merely perform for Him.
Today’s readings are a reminder of how we are supposed to live as Christians, not only observing the commandments, but living them with converted hearts. True religion leads us to action. We must live it with acts of love directed to God and our neighbor. Let us strive to be holy every day!
Spend some time with the offerings below from staff to prepare for Sunday Mass.
Anticipate Sunday, August 29
- Mass Readings – In the scripture readings James tells us to be doers of the law, not hearers only.
- Scripture Reflection – In this week’s reflection Jon invites you to reflect on how you embrace the “spirit of the law.”
- Music – Doug presents the music menu. Fr. Ricky Manalo wrote a beautiful song for communion, “Ang Katawan Ni Kristo,” with the verses in English and the refrain in a combination of English and his native Filipino.
Other Offerings
- Adult Faith Formation Program – The parish is offering the Alpha Program beginning this fall. Find out more here. Look for the insert in this Sunday’s bulletin. Let Jon know if you’d like to help.

Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time
Sunday, August 22, 2021
My Dear Friends in Christ,
We are created with a mission to accomplish, and we will not return to God without accomplishing it. Every day is a new day to discern that calling. Our calling includes one of the four vocations: Vowed Religious Life, Single Life, Married Life and Ordained Life. Sometimes in life we need to be reminded of our true calling.
In today’s Gospel Peter said to Jesus, “You have the words of eternal life.” Jesus never promised that following Him would be easy. Faith is accepting what we cannot understand, what we cannot prove, what we cannot figure out. We just accept something as true, because we trust Jesus who tells us it is so.

Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Sunday, August 15, 2021
My Dear Friends in Christ,
Today we celebrate the Assumption of Mary — the moment she was taken up, body and soul, into heaven. Next to her divine Son, Mary truly is the model steward for us as we journey through this life. We too are called to be a dwelling place for the Lord. Yet for Christ to dwell in us, we must prepare our hearts for Him.
Mary was prepared for Christ to reside in her, and her Magnificat expresses how we can imitate her and prepare a place for Christ in ourselves: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord…” How can we proclaim the ‘greatness of the Lord?’ It is simply by how we choose to live our lives. We can choose to rise each day in prayer, respond to those around us in kindness, serve from a place of love and selflessness, and use our gifts and talents for the glory of God.

The Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Sunday, August 8, 2021
My Dear Friends in Christ,
When we feel we have reached the end of our own resources, God takes over, because he is faithful and never forgets his people. To receive all that God wants to give us in the Eucharistic, we must do our part in being receptive to His grace and living out active discipleship in our day-to-day lives. Then we must go forth, being attentive to the moments when the Holy Spirit is calling us to act as He acts — in total love and sacrifice.
In different ways, we can all relate to the prophet Elijah as he “flees for his life.” We might feel like we are fleeing for our lives by running from a problem that is causing us stress, fighting an illness, or just barely making it through the week. Just as the angel reminded Elijah, in these moments of despair or desolation, we are called not to give up but to get up and keep going.

The Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Sunday, August 1, 2021
My Dear Friends in Christ,
In today’s readings, the Israelites ask Moses for food and the crowd looks to be fed by Jesus. Their needs were genuine, but the food given to them had a deeper meaning. It was a sign pointing to an inner grace, and the Israelites and the crowd around Jesus did not see that. They were content with having their stomachs filled, but Jesus wanted to give them “the food that endures for eternal life.”
As Christians, we have been called from our former lives to live in the newness of a life offered by our God. Every kind of situation with which we are confronted, we can use as an opportunity to discern what God is calling us to do.
Spend some time with the offerings below from staff to prepare for Sunday Mass.
Anticipate Sunday, August 1
- Mass Readings – The scripture readings tell of receiving bread from heaven.
- Scripture Reflection – In this week’s reflection Jon invites us to think about what “the bread of life” means to us.
